What is “Webspam”
News What is “Webspam”
Everyone has heard of Spam but what is “Webspam”? Yes, Web Spam, not the kind you find in a can…
Well, as highlighted by the latest Google update, they have named “Penguin 2.0” – Webspam is a low-quality website that has been made with the express intention to appear higher up the search engine listings where it doesn’t really deserve to be.
Webspam can be used to describe a series of tactics that people use to try and “spoof” or “fool” Google into putting their website higher on the rankings. The key tactics that people use for this are:
1. Keyword Stuffing – Whereby a webpage full of content gets loaded with keywords out of context, just intermixed into the other website content with the sole purpose of making google think the webpage is about those phrases
2. Link Schemes – Using incoming links from other websites to manipulate the Google search rankings. Many of these can violate Google policies, and that includes now (as of May 2013):
- Gaining links from low-quality directory sites
- Links that are distributed in the footer bar of other websites
- Text advertisements with links back
- Links embedded into the article but where the text link is out of context and makes no grammatical sense
Google’s recent efforts are focused around removing poor quality websites from the search results, so as ever, our advice to customers would be to simply generate good unique content that doesn’t attempt to fool anyone, but is something that if you were a customer of yours you would be interested in reading and ideally would share with others. So how does this relate to the age-old question of “How do I get to be number 1 on Google?” – it is all about good quality, UNIQUE content.
Google will continue to work to purge out bad techniques and poor quality websites so work now to be proactive with good quality website content and build a great online business for the future.
